Serious literature, beautifully produced
So’ham Books was founded in 2000 by the late Dr Jitendra Vashishtha, a well-known Indian poet and translator, with Samartha Vashishtha serving as its honorary founding co-editor. The press operated uninterrupted from 2000 until approximately 2009, and is now being revived in 2026.
The name of the publishing house comes from a sacred Sanskrit mantra (सोऽहम्) that means “I am That” or “He am I,” combining saḥ (He/That, representing ultimate reality) and aham (me).
Over the years, So’ham Books placed particular emphasis on editorial discretion, publishing a small number of well-received and beautifully produced volumes of poetry and prose. These included several books by the American author Suzanne Nielsen, currently Professor of Writing, Literature, and Language at Metropolitan State University, Minnesota; a book of poems by Jasmine Kang; and Samartha Vashishtha’s debut collection of poems.
SOHAM BOOKS LLP, incorporated in India in 2026, carries forward the literary and family legacy of the So’ham Books imprint as a new and separate legal entity from the publishing concern that operated from 2000 to 2009.
Our mission
The revival of So’ham Books is a response to the current void and crisis in the world of creative publishing. AI-driven self-publishing and vanity platforms have driven the editorial quality and production quality of published work to its absolute nadir. So’ham Books strives to provide a forum where high-quality literature finds an avenue to publication. We welcome submissions and evaluate each with a keen editorial eye for quality and suitability as serious literature. Our primary focus is on producing literature of value and enduring importance rather than monetary benefit.
